Can I install this at home, or do I need a certified mechanic?
The EcoHitch for the 2021-2016 Toyota Sienna is a bolt-on installation. If you are comfortable removing and reinstalling the rear bumper, you can install the EcoHitch. The instructions provided should really just be a QR code, because the quality of the photos is severely lacking.
Removal of trim pieces and the old crossbar were fairly simple. When installing the hitch, you need to be careful when torquing down the bolts not angle your socket too much, or it will grab the split washer and deform it. Thankfully I had extras lying around.
Ensure you have a torque wrench available if DIYing.
I also highly recommend a rotary tool with plastic cutting disk, as it made the cuts super easy.
The instructions for relocation of the kick sensor worked for me, drilling new holes on the "bottom" of the kick sensor piece and screwing them into the pre-existing holes in the bumper worked, after dremelling the 3 tabs off the bottom. The screws hold fine. I put the tabs back in place with their clips in their original position to prevent debris from having another 3 holes to enter, though the cutout for the receiver may make that a moot point.
The cutout for the receiver per instructions worked for me with enough clearance, but I had to make 2 additional cuts for the portions of the hitch that come up and around from the stock mounting points, as there was not enough clearance for the bumper to come down fully and it strained it.
Additionally, there were several small rounded pieces inside the bumper itself, 2 of them are in the vicinity of the hitch wraparound portions, one hitting it, and I needed to cut them off.
Finally, I had to trim the small plastic cover on the drivers side, taking about 2 inches or so away from the inner portion and cutting it all the way to the back of the piece. There is no hardware securing it back there any longer and it moves a bit. If it bothers me, I may drill a hole and use a body clip there.
The hitch's clearance is great, I previously had a unit that sat below everything and due to our driveway it would scrape each time, so this is a definite improvement.
The kick sensor and backup sensors work fine without issue upon completing installation, the instructions mention only the left working, I have yet to use it extensively, but the left did work in my testing before putting everything away.
I look forward to many years of use with this hitch.
The main problem is tolerances and attention to detail. The side plates on my hitch were slightly and unevenly bowed in - maybe from shipping, or maybe intentional. The result was that I could not perfectly center the hitch. Instead, I had to slide it as far as I could to the right using the built in tolerances in the bolt holes. Otherwise one of the bowed-in sides would hit the rear structure of the car.
The instructions are pretty lacking. The instructions for adapting the kick sensor did not work for me, there was still not even close to enough clearance. I had to move the kick sensor even higher up, to the third “wall” of the sensor, as far as it would go. The instructions also mentioned cutting a groove into the driver’s side rear cover, but I actually had to cut grooves into both undersides of the rear bumper too. Also there are two metal tabs poking in from the bumper that hit the hitch directly on the side plates and prevented the bumper from reinstalling properly - I had to grind these down.
Lastly there is a wiring harness on the left side of the bumper that is simply unaddressed in the instructions, and sits directly in the path of the hitch side plate. It’s briefly visible in the install video, where they pulled it down and around the hitch - but this stretches the cable, and also requires additional cutouts in the bumper and driver side rear cover to accommodate. In the end it’s just kind of left poking down below the bumper. Ideally they could have cut a small pass through in the side plate for this wiring harness to go through.
Overall I still think it’s absolutely worth it, you just need a bit of patience and a multitool. The end result is great and it looks seamless. I am also still able to use my trunk kick sensor from either side of the hitch. With some minor adjustments and more comprehensive instructions this would be a 5/5.
Two things...as i was tightening the bolts on both sides closest to the back bumber both flat washers were smashed and both split washers got mangled. I tried torquing the 3 bolts on each side evenly...a little at a time, but the support brackets hit seams in the underbody of my 2024 on both sides and they start further away from the body of the van than the other 2 bolt positions on each side. This makes the bolt not perpendicular to the support brackets and i believe this put uneven pressure on the washers. I bought new washers and tried again and it finished smoothly. The hitch got pressed into the seams on both sides.
Another thing is the cut the instructions tell you to make in the plastic panel behind the driver's side rear tire. It says 7.5" long. That is about 3" longer than i made the cut. The recommended cut would have left a sizable gap and i didn't want winter road spray to get up there. The recommended width of the cut is 2". I made that about a 1/2" less. This left barely any gap where it meets the support bracket.
Very happy with the way it looks and plan to buy the version Torklift has for my 2011 Sienna as well.
