So, you’ve got yourself a sleek, futuristic 2021-2024 Polestar 2, and now you’re ready to up the ante by installing an Ecohitch. Whether it’s for towing, bike racks, or just to make your car look even cooler (if that’s possible), we’ve got you covered. Follow this easy step-by-step guide, and before you know it, you’ll be ready to hit the road with your new hitch.
What You’ll Need
Before we dive in, let’s check your toolbox. You’ll need:
And, of course, the Ecohitch kit, which includes all the bolts, washers, and magic you need.
Step 1: Prep Your PolestarBefore you start, chock the front tires and raise the rear of your vehicle using ramps, jack stands, or a hoist. If you’re using a lift, make sure to use Polestar-approved lifting points—your car will appreciate the TLC.
Step 2: Remove Some Screws (But Keep Them Handy!)On both sides of the vehicle, grab your T25 Torx bit and remove the Torx screws holding everything together (Figures 2.1 and 2.2). Then, peel back the fender liner to access one last silver Torx head screw (Figure 2.3).
Step 3: More Fasteners, More FunContinue removing additional Torx screws at the bottom of the plastic panel (Figures 3.1 and 3.2). Don’t forget the sneaky one at the panel’s corner (Figure 3.3).
Step 4: Say Goodbye to the Taillight CoverUnclip and remove the taillight cover by lifting it up and away from the vehicle. Also, don’t forget to remove the rubber bumper (Figure 4.2). Repeat on the other side like a pro.
Step 5: Bumper Removal TimeTake out the three hex head screws (Figures 5.1 and 5.2), then remove the rear bumper (yes, with the taillights still attached)(Figure 5.3).
Step 6: Disconnect the Harnesses
You’ll find some electrical harnesses on both sides of the vehicle (Figures 6.1 and 6.2). Unplug them gently—no yanking!
Step 7: Out with the Old, In with the NewNow, locate and unbolt the six flange nuts (Figures 7.1 and 7.2) to remove the factory cross member. You won’t be needing this anymore, so feel free to set it aside or frame it as a reminder of your hard work.
Step 8: Hitch Installation
Time to install your Ecohitch! Secure it in place of the old cross member using the flange nuts you removed earlier. Then, insert a 3/8” bolt and washer through the frame and side plates into the remaining slots (Figures 8.1 and 8.2).
Step 9: Bolt It Down!
Fasten the 3/8” split washer, flat washer, and hex nut onto the bolt (Figures 8.3 and 8.4). Torque the factory nuts to 45 ft-lbs (61 Nm) and the 3/8” bolt to 20 ft-lbs (27 Nm). Precision is key!
Step 10: Trim to Fit
Using a reciprocating saw (or another trimming tool), remove the necessary plastic sections to make room for the new hitch (Figures 9.1 and 9.2). Think of it as giving your Polestar a precision haircut.
Step 11: Put Everything Back Together
Reinstall all the factory components in reverse order. If you remember where everything goes, give yourself a high-five!
Final Step: Adapter Installation
Slide the insert adapter into the receiver hitch and secure it using:
Torque the bolt to 112 ft-lbs (152 Nm) and double-check it before each use. Safety first!
