Colorful Steps
When it comes to our state of the art, in-house powder coating system, there are five steps that the parts go through before being completed. For this article we are going to focus on the two major steps that have to do with color: electro-static powder coating and curing in the oven.

Powder coatings are combined with curatives, pigments, leveling agents and other additives. These ingredients are mixed, cooled and grounded into a uniform powder. With the electro-static powder coating step, the powder coat material receives an electric charge that creates a magnetic attraction between the metal parts and the powder. Sprayed with the high-tech Gema Optiflex 2 powder coat guns, the powder coating material is drawn to the part, ensuring full and even coverage. The powder coat is also eco-friendly since it does not produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like regular paint. Also at Torklift Central, we certify our discharge water quality through the state of Washington Ecological Department to maintain state certification and to protect the environment.

After the part is coated, it is put into the cure oven. It is a gas-fired oven that runs at 420 degrees for 30 minutes to completely cure the powder coat finish. The powder coat is baked to its final finish with a smooth, hard skin. Because powder coating is not a liquid, it can produce a thicker coating than conventional paints and liquids without sagging or running.
