Our Retail Product Development Center (RPDC), is a unique in-house shop that brings together engineering expertise, custom fabrication capabilities, and a deep-rooted passion for solving challenges others shy away from.

Recently, our RPDC was called into action for a very special project: fabricating a custom trailer hitch for a beautifully preserved 1976 Volkswagen Bus. With vehicles this iconic (and this old), off-the-shelf solutions just don’t cut it. That’s where our RPDC shines.

Meeting the Bus

When this classic VW rolled into our shop, it presented a few unique challenges. The rear undercarriage space was tight, the exhaust system offered little clearance, and the bumper structure required thoughtful integration to preserve the original aesthetic.

Our mission? Build a fully functional, structurally sound trailer hitch—while maintaining the integrity and vintage look of the bus.

From Blueprint to Backroad-Ready

At the RPDC, our skilled fabricators and welders take custom jobs like this from concept to completion entirely on-site. The process kicked off with careful measurements and mock-ups to ensure a precise fit that wouldn’t interfere with the exhaust or the frame.

Our team designed a welded hitch mount that integrated seamlessly beneath the rear bumper. Take a look at the result:

The hitch is built from high-strength steel and carefully TIG-welded for durability. As seen here, it aligns snugly against the bus's rear, tucking cleanly under the body while maintaining clearance from the tailpipe:
