Before a receiver goes on your trailer, Torklift Central matches the exact Airstream® to the right TailoredHitch, then checks whether your loaded rack or tray works with that hitch and your trailer’s balance.

Airstream® owners around Kent, Seattle, Tacoma, and the rest of the Puget Sound area add rear hitches for the same reasons: get the bikes off the tow vehicle, move the cooler and firewood out of the trailer, and give the generator a home that is not the floor. A rear receiver makes all of that possible.
Getting there takes three answers. Which hitch fits this exact trailer? What can that hitch carry once a rack or tray sits behind it? And how does that rear load change the trailer’s balance? At Torklift Central in Kent, WA, our technicians and on-site engineers work through all three before installation day.
Here is what we review, and what to bring so your RV trailer hitch installation goes smoothly.
Start With the Right TailoredHitch for Your Airstream
For compatible Airstream applications, TailoredHitch is the product path we review first. Torklift International designed each TailoredHitch around a specific Airstream application, and each one uses a 2-inch receiver, so many owners can reuse the bike rack or cargo tray they already have. Each part number has its own fitment and its own rating:
- X8000: Airstream trailers with a factory storage bumper, including Pottery Barn® edition trailers, with a frame width of 61 to 62.5 inches. Rated for 450 pounds tongue weight at the trailer ball.
- X8001: Airstream trailers with a factory storage bumper and a frame width of 66 to 67.5 inches. Rated for 450 pounds tongue weight at the trailer ball.
- X8006S: Airstream Bambi® trailers without a rear bumper, in 16, 20, and 22-foot lengths. Stainless steel receiver, rated for 300 pounds tongue weight at the trailer ball.
- X8007S: 2021 to 2026 Airstream Basecamp® 20 trailers. Stainless steel receiver angled upward to help keep accessories level, rated for 357 pounds tongue weight at the trailer ball.
- X8008S: 2016 to 2026 Airstream Basecamp 16 trailers. Stainless steel receiver angled upward to help keep accessories level, rated for 357 pounds tongue weight at the trailer ball.
These paths do not swap. The X8000 and X8001 do not fit Bambi trailers with a factory or aftermarket bumper, a Basecamp 16 hitch is not a Basecamp 20 hitch, and the 450-pound X8000 and X8001 rating does not carry over to the Bambi or Basecamp hitches. Review the X8000 and X8001, Bambi, Basecamp 20, and Basecamp 16 product pages for the current details.
Frame Width, Bumpers, and What Is Already on the Back
For the X8000 and X8001, frame width decides the part number. Measure the trailer frame from outside to outside. For the Bambi hitch, Torklift uses a different check: measure the distance between the two vertical portions of the skid plates on each side. If that measurement falls below 58-3/4 inches or above 61-1/4 inches, contact Torklift support before going further. Whichever path applies, confirm measurements and verify compatibility before you order or schedule.
We also look at everything already mounted at the rear of the trailer:
- Airstream model, model year, and floorplan or length
- Factory storage bumper, aftermarket bumper, or no rear bumper
- Any existing receiver or rear-mounted accessories
- Rear frame configuration and any previous modifications
An aftermarket bumper does not automatically rule out a rear hitch. It does mean a technician needs to see how it mounts and whether it changes the path for a TailoredHitch.
Accessory Weight Is Only Half the Rating Question
A TailoredHitch rating is measured at the trailer ball. Bike racks, cargo carriers, generator trays, and extensions hold their load further out behind the receiver, and that leverage significantly reduces how much the hitch system can safely carry. A rack and bikes that add up to less than the hitch rating on paper can still be too much once you account for distance.
That is why Torklift built the Maximum Hitch Weight (Tongue Weight) Estimator. Run your setup through it before you load up, and bring these details to your appointment:
- Bike and E-Bike racks: rack brand and model, empty rack weight, number of bikes, each bike’s weight, whether the rack manufacturer approves the rack for RV or trailer use, and any extension or swing-away device.
- Cargo carriers: carrier weight, planned cargo weight, and how far the loaded carrier sits behind the receiver.
- Generator trays: tray weight, generator weight, loaded distance behind the receiver, and the exact tray model so we can check compatibility with your hitch.
Generator plans deserve extra care. A generator and tray that fit within the 450-pound X8000 rating may not work on a 300-pound Bambi hitch, so we match the plan to the exact hitch on your trailer.
Single-Axle Airstream Trailers Need a Balance Check
Bambi, Basecamp, and other single-axle trailers bring one more question. Weight carried at the rear of a single-axle trailer can reduce the trailer’s tongue weight at the tow vehicle. Torklift’s guidance is that ballast added toward the front of the trailer may be required to maintain proper tongue weight and offset what you carry at the rear.
As a general guide, about 10 percent of the overall trailer weight should be tongue weight. A single-axle trailer weighing 3,000 pounds fully loaded should carry roughly 300 pounds of tongue weight. Staying under the hitch rating alone does not guarantee that balance, so we review the full loaded plan with you.
The Bambi and Basecamp TailoredHitch products are also not rated for towing another trailer behind the Airstream.
When Custom Fabrication Makes Sense
Custom work is not automatically the better choice. When a TailoredHitch fits, it is the path we recommend. We look at custom fabrication when:
- No TailoredHitch is listed for the trailer, such as a Bambi with a rear bumper, which falls outside the X8006S application
- The trailer has been modified
- Existing rear equipment changes the mounting path
- The actual trailer structure needs further review
When custom work is the right call, Torklift Central has the tools for it. As the Kent, WA Retail Product Development Center, we combine hands-on technician support and on-site engineers with in-house fabrication, laser tube cutting, robotics, and powder coating. If your trailer is not listed, you can also tell Torklift about your trailer so the application can be considered for future TailoredHitch production.

Key Takeaways
- TailoredHitch is the first path to review for compatible Airstream trailers, and each part number has its own fitment and rating.
- Frame width separates X8000 and X8001, while Bambi and Basecamp trailers use their own dedicated TailoredHitch products.
- Rack, carrier, and tray weight act at a distance behind the receiver, so run the Maximum Hitch Weight Estimator before loading.
- Rear loads on Bambi, Basecamp, and other single-axle trailers can reduce tongue weight, and front ballast may be required.
- Custom fabrication is reviewed only when no correct TailoredHitch applies or the trailer’s configuration calls for it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I get an Airstream rear hitch installed near Kent?
Torklift Central at 315 Central Ave N in Kent, WA installs compatible TailoredHitch products and reviews custom options when no TailoredHitch applies. Call 253-854-1832 or schedule online.
Can I carry E-Bikes behind my Airstream?
Possibly, depending on the hitch, the rack, and the total loaded weight at its distance behind the receiver. Bring your rack model, rack weight, and each bike’s weight, and confirm the rack manufacturer approves it for RV or trailer use.
Can an Airstream rear hitch carry a generator?
Some setups can. The generator and tray weight, their distance behind the receiver, and the exact hitch rating all need to line up, so a generator plan that works on one TailoredHitch may not work on another.
Which TailoredHitch fits my Airstream?
X8000 and X8001 fit trailers with a factory storage bumper, separated by frame width. X8006S fits Bambi trailers without a rear bumper. X8007S fits the 2021 to 2026 Basecamp 20, and X8008S fits the 2016 to 2026 Basecamp 16.
Does frame width matter?
Yes, for the X8000 and X8001. The X8000 fits a frame width of 61 to 62.5 inches and the X8001 fits 66 to 67.5 inches, measured outside to outside. Bambi fitment uses a skid-plate measurement instead.
Can Torklift Central install a Basecamp hitch?
Yes. Torklift Central can install the X8007S on compatible Basecamp 20 trailers or X8008S on compatible Basecamp 16 trailers.
Does rear cargo affect Airstream tongue weight?
Yes. On Bambi, Basecamp, and other single-axle trailers, weight at the rear can reduce tongue weight at the tow vehicle, and ballast toward the front may be required to maintain proper balance.
Rating and balance notice: No rear hitch increases your Airstream® trailer’s ratings or your tow vehicle’s factory towing capacities. Each TailoredHitch rating is measured at the trailer ball, and racks, carriers, trays, and extensions significantly reduce usable capacity. Stay within the lowest-rated component, follow the accessory manufacturer’s guidance, and use the Maximum Hitch Weight Estimator. Single-axle trailers may require front ballast to maintain proper tongue weight, and the Bambi and Basecamp TailoredHitch products are not rated for towing.
