VW Golf R and GTI — 2022 - 2025 — Stainless Steel EcoHitch® Trailer Hitch

So, you've decided to equip your hot hatch with a Ecohitch. Maybe you're planning on hauling a small trailer, a bike rack, or just want to be the coolest person at the track day with a tow hitch. Whatever your reason, you’re in the right place.

Installing a hitch can sound intimidating, but fear not! Follow these step-by-step instructions, and you’ll have it mounted faster than you can say “turbo lag.” Let’s get started!

Before You Begin—What You’ll Need

✔️ Patience (Just kidding—this is easier than it looks)
✔️ A Jack and Jack Stands (or ramps if you’re feeling fancy)
✔️ Basic Hand Tools (Torx bits, sockets, a pry tool, and ratchet)
✔️ A Friend (because a second set of hands is always helpful)
✔️ WD-40 (the magic juice for stubborn exhaust mounts)

Step 1: Lift It Up

Chock the front tires and get the rear of your GTI/Golf R up on jack stands or ramps. If you're lucky enough to have a lift, use the Volkswagen-approved lifting points.

Step 2: Fender Liner Fun

Using a T25 Torx bit, remove the screws holding the rear fender liner to the bumper. Do this on both sides.

Step 3: Bumper Business

Underneath the car, find the two T15 screws holding the bumper cover. Remove these, but don’t lose the plastic clips attached to them. You'll need those later.

Step 4: Make Space—Drop the Exhaust

Hit the exhaust mounts with some WD-40 and slide the rubber insulators off the mounting points. Lower the exhaust just enough to make room for the hitch—not enough to make it an impromptu floor ornament. Use a zip tie or wire to support it.

Step 5: Hide-and-Seek with a T25 Screw

Peel back the fender liner to expose a hidden T25 screw at the top of the bumper cover. Unscrew it. Feel accomplished. Repeat on the other side.

Step 6 & 7: Taillight Time

Open the liftgate, use a pry tool to remove the taillight trim panels, and unfasten the T25 bolts holding the taillights in place. Gently pull them out, unplug the harness, and store them somewhere safe.

Step 8: Bumper Cover Removal—A Two-Person Job

Time to phone a friend! Carefully pull the bumper cover outward and unclip the harness on the passenger side. Set the bumper aside—you’re officially committed to this install now.

Step 9: Sensor Disconnect

Unplug the red harness from the rear cross member. While you’re at it, disconnect the side sensors as well.

Step 10 & 11: Remove the Rear Cross Member

Using a 13mm and 10mm socket, remove the bolts holding the sensors. Once the sensors are out, unbolt the rear cross member while supporting it. Pro tip: Dropping it on your foot isn’t recommended.

Step 12 & 13: Position the Hitch

Thread bolts toward the rear of the vehicle into the designated holes to align the hitch before lifting it into place. Secure everything with the included washers and fasteners. Tighten the bolts to 22 ft-lbs (30Nm).

Step 14: Fisher-Price Bolt Trick

Use the included bolt fisher to guide a ½” bolt through the round hole under the car. This is one of those “Wow, that actually worked” moments. Once it’s through, secure it with the provided washers and nut. Torque to 57 ft-lbs (77Nm).

Step 15: Trimming the Bumper

Using a body saw or other tool, trimming the designated sections of the bumper cover.

  • GTI: See Figure 15.1
  • Golf R: See Figure 15.2
This is the point where you double-check before trimming and reassure yourself that yes, this is supposed to happen.

Step 16: Put It All Back Together

Reinstall the bumper cover, sensors, taillights, and exhaust—basically, do everything you just did, but in reverse. Bonus points if you don’t have extra screws left over at the end.

Step 17: Hitch Adapter & Final Torque Check

Slide the insert adapter into the receiver hitch and secure it using the provided bolt and washers. Torque to 112 ft-lbs (152Nm). Double-check that everything is tight. Re-torque before each use.
